I've been seeing the Ralph Lauren Christmas aesthetic all over social media lately. It's the viral holiday look this season, with elements of deep red tartan, glowing candlelight, luxe velvet bows, evergreen garlands, and wood paneling. It's timeless and nostalgic—you might imagine it in a New England country estate. It's also aspirational, which is why there are countless DIY and shopping videos for it online.
I love the look, too, but recreating it can come with a price tag that is anything but magical. Designer plaid linens, heavy glassware, and polished brass accents add up fast.
So when I heard about the red-and-green plaid placemats at the Dollar Tree, my curiosity piqued. It turns out, they're a pretty convincing dupe. For $1.50 each, they look pretty similar to Pottery Barn's Stewart Plaid placemats, which ring in at a whopping $48 for a set of four.

Why I Love the Dollar Tree's Plaid Placemats
Despite being a budget find, these placemats really capture the Ralph Lauren holiday vibe. The tartan print is classic and balanced, with rich colors that give a cozy lodge feel. There's nothing gimmicky or cartoonish about them—no glitter, characters, or trendy patterns that will feel dated by next year. They're timeless.
And while these affordable placemats are not cork-backed like Pottery Barn's, the woven texture has structure and heft, which makes them look more expensive than $1.50 each—especially when they're used as a layering piece. There's design science behind layering: Placemats create a visual frame that gives any plate a sense of composition. The texture, mixed with the color contrast, suggests a more polished look.
Of course, they're not identical to Pottery Barn's version, which is sturdier out of the box because of the cork backing. But the vibe is very similar. Side by side, they complement each other far more than they compete.
And if you're dressing a full holiday table, not spending an arm and a leg is the way to go. If you get eight placemats for a full holiday table, you're looking at $96 at Pottery Barn versus $12 at Dollar Tree. That's $84 back in your pocket–enough to buy the holiday roast, a bottle of wine, and maybe even a special pie from the bakery (or the ingredients to make your own). I'm here for every bit of this smart buy.
Practically speaking, the material is soft, durable, easy to wipe down, and forgiving. They're affordable enough to use for kids' craft tables, hot chocolate stations, cookie-decorating parties, or even as shelf liners inside a hutch.
If you want your holiday table to feel a little Ralph Lauren cabin Christmas without spending a small fortune, these placemats are an easy yes. They're festive and pretty, and they're so inexpensive that you can grab a few extra for the kids' table, too.
