Simply Recipes / OREO/Mondelez
Is there a more nostalgic combination than an Oreo with milk? I think not. This classic pairing has been around since 1912, when Oreos were still made in New York City. Though the Oreo recipe has undergone some changes throughout the years, none are as massive as the brand’s latest—an Oreo that’s made entirely without sugar.
Set to appear at grocery stores in 2026, Oreo Zero Sugar is the first-ever cookie from the brand that’s sugar-free. The move comes in response to a 2024 study that found that 66% of Americans want to reduce their sugar intake, which makes sense considering that excessive sugar consumption has been linked to a wide range of health conditions, from diabetes to heart disease. For anyone who’s avoiding aspartame, it’s worth noting that Oreo Zero Sugar is sweetened with maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium.
Though the potential for a healthier Oreo sounds appealing, I was mostly concerned with a more important question: Do they taste good?

What Do Zero Sugar Oreos Taste Like?
I was skeptical that an Oreo could be good without sugar. Sugar is pretty important when it comes to cookies, especially ones stuffed with a sweet creme filling. That's why my mind was blown when I bit into one of the new Oreos and found that it mostly tasted like a regular Oreo. When dunked into a glass of milk, it was almost impossible to tell the difference between it and any of the other thousands of Oreos I have enjoyed in my lifetime!
I was most impressed that I didn’t detect any of the chemical aftertaste that can sometimes be associated with artificially sweetened snacks, and the cookie’s crunchy texture was identical to the original.
I had a similar reaction to the Double Stuf Oreo Zero Sugar, which tastes remarkably like a regular Double Stuf Oreo. It was maybe a bit sweeter than the original, thanks to the combination of artificial sweeteners, but definitely close enough to fool pretty much anyone into thinking that it’s just a normal cookie.
What Else Is New?
Oreo Zero Sugar has different packaging, too. Instead of the typical pull-open sleeves of cookies, these are sold in a stand-up bag that contains convenient packs of two, making them easy to throw in a lunchbox or purse for a quick snack. And, as a bonus, you won’t have to worry about the cookies getting stale when your kids forget to close the packaging for the millionth time, as with original Oreos.
Oreo Zero Sugar will begin hitting supermarket shelves in January 2026, and if you fall in love, don’t worry—these are a permanent addition to the Oreo lineup.
