As a food editor, I'm always keeping an eye on recalls, especially those involving labeling errors or hidden allergens. This week, two recalls stood out, one involving a Publix coffee cake with undeclared walnuts and another tied to a popular dairy-free frozen dessert. Both could pose serious risks for certain shoppers, depending on allergies or sensitivities. Here's what you need to know, including how to tell if your food is part of a recall and what to do next.
Publix Coffee Cake Recalled After Mislabeling Omits Allergen
On December 16, 2025, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration shared that James Skinner LLC, recalled its Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake after discovering that packages had the wrong ingredient label.
The recalled products are Maple Walnut Coffee Cakes mistakenly packed in cartons labeled "Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake." While the raspberry label notes that the product was processed on equipment that also handles almonds, pecans, and walnuts, it does not list walnuts as an ingredient. The product could pose a serious or life-threatening risk to people with a walnut allergy if eaten.
Fortunately, this coffee cake is sold in packaging with a clear lid, so the walnut topping is visible. The labeling error was discovered when a Publix employee noticed walnuts on a product labeled "Raspberry Coffee Cake," which doesn't contain walnuts!
How To Identify the Recalled Coffee Cake
- Product: 14-ounce Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake
- SKU: 54591
- Distribution: Publix retail stores in eight states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia
If you have a walnut allergy, do not eat the recalled coffee cake. Consumers who purchased the product should return it to their nearest Publix store for a refund.
Questions can be directed to the James Skinner bakery at 1-800-358-7428, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
