To celebrate the holidays, many of us like to pop a bottle of something sparkling. I want a Prosecco that's bubbly, but not too bubbly. That’s exactly the risk with Costco's Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, which has been recalled due to the risk of unexpected bursting.

On November 6, 2026, F&F Fine Wines International, Inc., dba Ethica Wines, announced a recall of an estimated 941,400 bottles of Kirkland Signature Prosecco. The company received 10 reports of bottles shattering or breaking, and one event resulted in a laceration injury.

Costco shared a recall letter with its members, though the letter did not explain what caused the too-bubbly Prosecco. Wine Spectator reports that bottles can explode when "under extreme pressure," either because fermentation wasn’t fully complete before bottling, or fermentation starts again inside the bottle. The fermentation process creates bubbles of carbon dioxide, but when there's too much of a good thing, pressure builds up inside the bottle and can cause it to shatter.

How To Identify Recalled Prosecco

Costco sold its Kirkland Signature Prosecco at various locations across the Midwest between April 2025 and August 2025 for about $8 each. Look for the following information on the label to identify any potentially hazardous bottles.

  • Product: Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG
  • Packaging: Green glass bottle with purple foil on top and a purple label
  • UPC: 196633883742
  • Costco Item Number: 1879870
  • Distribution: Costco stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin

What To Do With the Recalled Prosecco

It pains me to say this, but you’ll want to discard the bubbly ASAP. Don't wait—and don't attempt to open the bottle, either. Immediately discard the Prosecco in your outdoor trash bin.

The good news? You’re eligible for a refund—and you don’t need to return the bottle. Just bring proof of purchase to your Costco warehouse.
