The Costco Bacon My Family Can’t Stop Eating (It’s Not Kirkland)

I stock up on it every time I go to Costco.

We eat a lot of bacon in our house. And by we, I really mean our 15-year-old son eats a lot of bacon. If I cook an entire package, my husband and I are lucky if we manage to snag a strip or two because our son will eat them all in one sitting. So, I buy a lot of bacon, and as a family, we’ve tried dozens of different brands.

Through this process of discovery, I recently found our new favorite at Costco: Coleman Hickory Smoked Uncured Bacon.

What’s So Great About Coleman Hickory Smoked Uncured Bacon

A three-pack, 36 ounces, of bacon costs $13.69 at my local Costco—through its website, it's $15.31. The price, which is quite reasonable, led me to toss the package into my cart, but it’s the taste that has led me to keep buying it every time I make a Costco trip.

“Wow,” my bacon-obsessed son said the first time he tried it. “This bacon is perfectly sweet—it’s so good.”

I could detect the slight sweetness that he noticed, but what really struck me was the depth of flavor and the pronounced smokiness. This is perhaps one of the smokiest-tasting bacons I’ve ever had, but in the best way.

I also noticed the thickness of the slices. It’s slightly thicker than Kirkland or some of the regular Aldi bacon brands we’ve tried. That heft means we get meaty slices instead of crumbly bits, which sometimes happens with other bacons, and the slices don’t shrink excessively as they cook, either.

I am also pretty excited about the ingredients. As someone trying to eat more cleanly in the new year, this bacon fits right in with that resolution. It is made from humanely raised pork with no antibiotics or hormones and it’s minimally processed, with no artificial ingredients and no added nitrates or nitrites. The ingredient list is refreshingly short: pork, water, brown sugar, sea salt, and cultured celery powder, a natural alternative to synthetic nitrites.

The pork is heritage Duroc—it’s, as the label says, “a premium breed known for abundant marbling which results in a more tender, juicy and flavorful pork.” I can definitely attest to its amazing flavor.

Mostly, we’ve enjoyed the bacon at breakfast and crumbled it into salads. Because it’s so flavorful, one or two strips are sufficient, whereas with other brands, I need three or four. A little bit of this bacon adds a big punch of flavor. I can’t wait to try it in casseroles and on baked potatoes.

Even though Costco sells it in three packs, it’s so delicious that with our family, it never seems to last as long as other bacons.
