This One-Ingredient Trick Takes Eggnog to the Next Level

It's genius.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, and I’m excited for the holiday treats that have returned to stores. Eggnog is a seasonal favorite I look forward to the most. It’s creamy, rich, slightly sweet, and always conjures memories of leaving cookies and milk out for Santa and decorating our Christmas tree as a kiddo.

Even as an adult, my love for eggnog hasn’t wavered at all. In fact, it may have grown even stronger. Once eggnog hits grocery store shelves, I grab a carton or three. Over the years, I’ve found plenty of ways to make it even more delicious—little tweaks and upgrades that elevate the flavor without changing what makes eggnog so good in the first place. One of my absolute favorites is adding chocolate syrup. Try it once, and you'll see why.

My 1-Ingredient Upgrade for Eggnog

I have chocolate syrup in the fridge from making sundaes all summer long, and I'm a fan of chocolate milk. A generous helping of this sweet treat takes eggnog to the next level. You'll get the most delicious chocolatey eggnog—the rich chocolate perfectly balances the warming spices for a satisfying, indulgent drink.

This two-ingredient, completely store-bought holiday treat couldn’t be easier to make. My go-to eggnog is Organic Valley’s Eggnog. It’s thick, creamy, and has all the spiced flavor you expect. As a bonus, I appreciate that the brand is thoughtful about where it sources its milk.

I add about a tablespoon of chocolate sauce. Any brand will do here; I usually grab whatever’s on sale, or 365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Chocolate Syrup.

Give the mixture a vigorous stir, or use an electric hand frother for extra creaminess. This chocolate eggnog is reminiscent of a spiced chocolate milk or a Mexican-adjacent hot chocolate, depending on whether you serve it hot or cold. I happily enjoy it both ways.

Tips for Trying My Eggnog Upgrade

Here are some tips for success on your first try at upgrading your eggnog:

  • Have fun with the presentation: If serving this recipe cold, I love adorning the inside of a clear glass with a drizzle of chocolate syrup before pouring in the eggnog.
  • Add a festive topping: I like to finish this upgraded drink with store-bought or homemade whipped cream, then shower the top with holiday-themed sprinkles for extra cheer.
  • Prefer it hot? Combine the eggnog and chocolate sauce in a small saucepan and heat it slowly. Stir constantly, and keep the flame at no higher than medium to prevent scalding or burning. Warm it just until steamy. No need to bring it to a simmer.
