The Only Store-Bought Biscuits This Food Writer Swears by (It's Not Pillsbury)

Sorry, Poppin' Fresh.

As a southern woman, being able to make excellent biscuits is an important point of pride. But sometimes I simply do not have the time or the patience to cut cold butter into flour and roll out biscuit dough. Because of this pride, I was generally skeptical of store-bought biscuits, but a newcomer to my grocery store's freezer aisle piqued my interest. Turns out, Joanna Gaines's biscuits have even more appeal than her shiplap.

The newest addition to the Fixer Upper maven's Magnolia empire is Jo’s Buttermilk Frozen Biscuits. This freezer find made its debut at Target in October, and I have to admit, they're the best store-bought biscuits I’ve ever tried. Unlike those that are sold in a can in the refrigerator case—sorry, Pillsbury!—these biscuits actually manage to replicate the fluffy, flaky texture of the real homemade deal.

Why I Was Still Skeptical at First

Upon removing the frozen, unbaked biscuits from the box, I was not immediately impressed. They looked like small beige squares, and I wasn’t sure whether or not they’d rise high like homemade biscuits in the oven. As they baked, though, the familiar tangy, buttery scent of good biscuits began to fill my apartment, and I got so excited that I decided to whisk together a quick cream gravy to go on top.

Once the biscuits came out of the oven, it was clear that the 400° heat had brought them to life. The layers separated nicely, and the buttery scent smelled like real, actual butter—not the fake stuff seen in a lot of frozen and refrigerated biscuits. After pulling apart two warm biscuits and smothering them in gravy, I quickly scarfed my breakfast and started dreaming up uses for the rest of the biscuits in the box.

How I’ll Use the Frozen Biscuits

I’m planning to keep a box of the Magnolia Table frozen biscuits in my fridge for carb emergencies—those moments when dinner needs a bready side but I’m not in the mood to bake, like when I’ve got a big hearty pot of soup just begging for a biscuit for dunking. I might even sneak them onto my Thanksgiving table, where they’ll fit in nicely alongside the cornbread muffins and array of homemade sides. Maybe they’ll even serve as the base for a leftovers sandwich stuffed with ham, stuffing, and cranberry sauce.

Having traveled to Joanna Gaines's home base in Waco, Texas, I'm not too surprised that she knows her way around a buttermilk biscuit. Now available at Target in a package of 6 biscuits for $9.99, they feel like an affordable secret weapon in my ongoing quest to build a roster of weeknight dinners that are as comforting as they are easy to make.
